Bandai Namco’s Tekken is back on top of the UK charts after almost 20 years, with Tekken 7 becoming the first number 1 entry of the series in the All Formats list since Tekken 3 in 1998. This is a huge improvement compared to the previous main entry, Tekken 6, which entered the list at number 8 in 2009, and continues the upward trend initiate by Tekken Tag Tournament 2, which entered at number 2 in 2012.
While we have no information about sales, we do know that those came overwhelmengly from PS4, amounting to 83% of the total, compared to 16% from Xbox One and 1% from retail copies for PC. That is in line with the chart positions in the Individual Formats list, where the PS4 version takes the number 1 spot, but the Xbox One version only made it to number 12.
Tekken’s triumphant arrival means that the UK charts have been commanded three weeks in a row by fighting games, with previous leader Warner’s Injustice 2 slipping to number 3 this week. Before that, Overwatch keeps the number 2 place thanks to its current marketing push focues on the anniversary events.
The rest of new releases of the week couldn’t reach the top 10, with VR-oriented Star Trek: Bridge Crew settling for number 14, and MXGP3 entering the list at number 22. In the case of the sci-fi game, it’s worth noting that the charts mostly reflect the sales from the PSVR version, since they don’t receive numbers from digital platforms like Steam.
