Even though Terminator Genisys made more money at the Box Office than Salvation, it still wasn’t enough for Paramount Studios to greenlight a sequel.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that the “Terminator universe is on hold indefinitely“. This basically means Paramount Studios is taking a rest from the franchise again and a sequel to Terminator Genisys may never materialize.
Terminator Genisys actually grossed over $440.2 million at the Box Office based off of a budget of $155 million. However, Paramount Studios is still expected to lose money from the movie so this was not enough to warrant a sequel.
This is the second time a Terminator reboot failed to kickstart another trilogy. Terminator Salvation was supposed to be another new trilogy, but that movie failed to please fans and critics too. That movie only grossed $371.4 million at the Box Office on a very bloated $200 million budget.
The Terminator franchise has never been the same since James Cameron stopped making them. Terminator 2 is the best movie of the franchise and it made the most money too. It grossed more money at the Box Office even without adjusting for inflation as it earned $519.8 million back in 1991. This figure would be higher in 2015 dollars.
This may come as sad news for fans that wanted to see Terminator Genisys 2. The movie teased a sequel would be happening, but now it looks like the series has been terminated for now.
