Several The Coalition developers shared a few more details on how Gears of War 4’s development is going.
Polygon interviewed several developers from The Coalition and they described how Gears of War 4 came to be.
First of all, a fourth game in the series was never planned by Epic Games. There was no timeline created to see what was going to happen after the events of the third game.
The Coalition had to pretty much brain storm some new ideas for Gears of War 4 on their own. They decided to go with a “whole new idea” for the game.
They did not want to say how the new game connects to the old trilogy yet. They refused to tell Polygon if the game is set in the same timeline chronologically, or even if it’s set in the same universe too.
They did say that there is less pressure with the new game than with Gears of War 3. That third game pushed the developers hard as they thought it would have been the last of the series. They pressured themselves to add as much content as possible.
With Gears of War 4 however, there won’t be so much expectations as essentially this is the first game for the Xbox One. Any new ideas they have can easily be put into further sequels. They don’t need to cram every idea to this game.
The Coalition even also admitted they were working on another IP of their own, until they stopped to make Gears of War 4 instead. Some of the assets they were making for that original game have now been put into Gears.
The new Gears of War game will be out in late 2016 exclusively for the Xbox One. The picture you see is one of the new characters named Kait.
