As we noted back in May, the sci-fi MMORPG WildStar is on its way to adopting a free to play revenue model. Today, signups opened for a closed beta that debuts all of the features promised alongside the new model. If you thought this would be a glorified stress test, Team WildStar has taken pains to state otherwise in a post to their blog.
This new content is not final and may – in fact, probably will – change due to testing. That’s why we need your help. Your thoughts, your livestreams, and your feedback on the CBT forums will help guide us in making the right changes for the right reasons.
When the time comes, current (“active”) subscribers will be moved onto a Signature program and given benefits accordingly — most of which will be cosmetic. Free-to-play players will have the same access to game content and opportunities as their paying counterparts, so that the game is not placed in a pay to win situation.
If you’re interested, signups are still open on the WildStar website — although not right this second, as the NA servers are down for a brief period of maintenance. WildStar’s transition to free to play is expected to be completed sometime this fall.
