Today is the official release date of the Oculus Rift, but if you weren’t one of the few who backed the original Kickstarer and received a free Oculus Rift CV1 then it might seem like another tease for what you don’t have. This is because while March 28th is the official launch day, actual orders haven’t really shipped yet.
As mentioned, those who backed the original Oculus Rift Kickstarter will be getting theirs today or tomorrow, as they were the first units to ship out. However, standard pre order customers will have to wait a while longer. How much longer? Oculus founder Palmer Luckey explained on Twitter late last night.
“Shipping update: Kickstarter Rifts will start arriving Mon, pre-orders start shipping mid-week (likely Wed) and will arrive this week too.” So, if you were a part of the initial round of Oculus Rift pre orders, the ones that specifically said they would arrive in March, then you should only have to wait a couple more days for your unit to arrive. If Luckey is right, and the company stays on track with shipments, then the next round should go out around Wednesday and arrive by Saturday.
If you were late getting your pre order in, then you are a part of the later shipments, which should start going out early next month and continue for some time. Just keep an eye on your email, as you will receive notices when your Oculus Rift is getting ready to ship, and then when it actually goes out. Your payment method will be charged at this time as well.
