Your SNES Classic Pre-Orders May Be in Jeopardy

As I’m sure many of you are aware, pre-orders for Nintendo’s upcoming micro console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition, were recently made available via Walmart’s website. Stock was sold out and the page to pre-order the item subsequently crashed after pre-orders were available for only about half an hour, but for those thirty minutes, many people successfully pre-ordered their SNES Classics. Or so they thought.

According to Polygon, Walmart had apparently made those pre-orders available on accident. Pre-orders for the SNES Classic weren’t supposed to be available until who knows when, but the fact that they were available for thirty minutes was a mistake and wasn’t supposed to happen. Pre-orders went live on July 21 and on July 22 several people were reporting that they had received notifications from Walmart stating that their pre-orders had been cancelled. Apparently, many of these notifications cited payment issues as the reason for the cancellations. Others theorize, while not confirmed by Walmart publicly, that Walmart oversold their stock and thus had to cancel many pre-orders to meet their actual stock.

Furthermore, a screenshot of a conversation with a Walmart representative seems to indicate that everyone who pre-ordered a SNES Classic during that half-hour window will have their order cancelled.

Despite this, there are still several people who, now more than two and a half days after pre-ordering, say that their pre-orders are still processing normally and that they have not received cancellation notifications.

Walmart hasn’t been completely silent on the issue, but they haven’t exactly been clear either. On one hand, it seems like the pre-orders may be legitimate and some of those who pre-ordered the SNES Classic will actually get it. This is evidenced by Walmart’s official Twitter congratulating some people who successfully pre-ordered the item.

On the other hand, the Walmart Help Twitter seems to admit that there was a mistake and that pre-orders for the SNES Classic went up before they were supposed to.

It is unclear at this point if Walmart will in fact cancel all pre-orders to rectify their mistake or if some of those who pre-ordered the micro console will actually receive it. Until Walmart makes an official, detailed statement on it, it’s probably best to keep an eye on your pre-order to make sure it continues processing normally.
