Country musician Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel, stirred up some serious conversation this week after she criticized the GOP’s messaging strategy following the Super Bowl halftime show, only to admit later that she hadn’t actually watched the performance, as reported by The Hill. This is a classic case of getting caught up in the digital discourse before getting all the facts.
Wilkins initially jumped into the fray after the Democratic Party’s official account on X posted something celebrating Puerto Rican rapper and superstar Bad Bunny. The post called the show an “All-American halftime with Bad Bunny,” and Wilkins thought the branding was incredibly effective. She didn’t hold back, saying Republicans need “better messaging” to unite.
Speaking on social media Sunday night, she said, “Unpopular: Republicans need to unite and get on better messaging because this branding is fantastic and allows all dems to get behind it. Also – super aesthetic.” It’s definitely worth noting that Bad Bunny is a politically charged figure for many conservatives. He previously backed former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, and he has also been vocal in his comments against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
President Trump himself had a very strong reaction to the performance, calling it an insult to the country
The president posted on his Truth Social platform that the show, which took place during the match-up between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, was “absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER!” President Trump felt the show was an “affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence.” He also criticized the music itself, arguing, “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World.”
The real kicker came Monday, however, when Wilkins posted a major clarification. She wanted to make it clear that her initial critique wasn’t about the quality of the performance itself. She admitted straight up she didn’t even tune in. “An important clarification on my post last night: I didn’t watch Bad Bunny’s performance at all. My point wasn’t the show,” she said in the follow-up post.
She explained that her focus was purely strategic, worrying that Republicans were losing ground they gained in the last election. She believes Democrats are going to “cosplay as people who ‘love America’ and our constitution to pick up moderates and youth votes.”
It seems her initial post was less about Bad Bunny being good and more about the Democratic strategy being, as she put it, “fantastic” at optics.
