A former atheist has shared the details of a profound experience that she claims completely shifted her understanding of life, death, and God. Dr Anna Stone claims she was clinically dead for six minutes following a medical emergency in 2016, an event that she believes fundamentally challenged her previous worldview.
As reported by VT, before this incident, Stone viewed herself merely as a collection of biological processes and was an athiest. She believed that death marked the end of individual consciousness and that her energy would simply return to the Earth to feed plants or other life forms.
This perspective changed after an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy ruptured, causing catastrophic internal bleeding. While doctors worked to save her, Stone says she experienced intense pain before suddenly finding herself outside of her physical body.
She says she encountered people from her past
During this time, Stone claims she could observe the medical staff working on her. She even alleges that she heard a doctor refer to her as a “junkie” while they were calling her time of death. She later confronted the doctor about this, asking, “If I’m clinically dead and you called my time a death, I should not have been able to see or hear any of this, right?” According to Stone, the doctor replied, “I’m sorry, I did. You shouldn’t have been able to hear that.”
The experience also involved a shift in how she perceived time and her own identity. Stone says she became aware of different versions of herself existing simultaneously, including versions of her at ages two, six, 12, and 16. She also encountered people from her past, which she claims allowed her to see how selfish she had been during those interactions.
She realized she had not considered the people she interacted with, and this realization acted as a catalyst for personal change. She described the moment she was told she would not remain in the afterlife as a wake up call, stating, “This was just, like, I call it my karmic b—- slap. It was like, Anna, get your s— together, what are you doing?”
Following her return, Stone reports that her relationship with alcohol changed instantly. When she tried to drink, the liquid reportedly turned into a warm foam in her mouth, forcing her to stop drinking entirely. She also claims she began hearing an internal voice that would warn her about dangerous situations.
These events led Stone to develop a new understanding of the divine. “I came back with this understanding that God, or source, or whatever you want to call it, is like an ocean,” she claimed. In her view, every human is an individual droplet containing something divine, and these droplets eventually return to a collective consciousness. She believes that the divisions people create based on politics, religion, or culture have little meaning.
Since the event, Stone has earned a PhD in spiritual psychology and now works with young people who have faced trauma. She continues to study the relationship between consciousness and sensitivity. While she admits she has no definitive answers about what happens after death, she remains hopeful about the nature of existence.
“I would hope that it means that we are not finite, that we are part of this collective organism of the universe that is, I believe, conscious,” Stone said. She expressed a desire for life to be more than just the daily grind, adding, “My hope is that this whole existence here is more than just bills and taxes and disappointments and rat racing. I really hope that there’s something after that makes all of this worthwhile.”
