High school basketball coach was once called a ‘great role model,’ but she now faces over 30 charges for ‘deviant’ acts involving a student

Paige Adams was indicted by a grand jury on more than 30 sex crimes Tuesday, marking a sudden and severe turn for the former high school basketball coach. The 35-year-old resigned from her position at Cold Springs High School in Alabama less than a month before these legal developments surfaced.

According to New York Post, the charges against Adams are extensive and include “engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student,” sexual contact involving a pupil under 19, and distributing obscene material to a student. These serious allegations could lead to a sentence of 31 years in prison if she is convicted. Cullman County district attorney Champ Crocker commented on the scope of the legal action, stating, “This 32-count grand jury indictment speaks for itself.”

It is a massive shift for someone who previously held a high standing within the local education system. Shane Barnette, the school district superintendent, once described Adams as “a great role model for the young people of Cullman County.” This assessment came before the current situation unfolded, which has now left the community grappling with the fallout.

That ‘role model’ label didn’t age well at all

Barnette explained that he received a formal complaint regarding the coach, which triggered an immediate investigation. He noted, “This is the first formal complaint I have received regarding this employee.” According to the superintendent, the school district moved quickly once the concerns were raised. “As soon as the concern was brought forward, an investigation was immediately initiated. The employee chose to resign at that time,” Barnette said.

Adams had spent her first and only season leading the Cold Springs Eagles girls team, where she achieved a state championship. Her departure followed the investigation, and the legal proceedings are now moving forward in the court system. Adams was released from jail after posting a $225,000 bond, though she is currently required to wear an electronic tag as part of her release conditions.

While the specific age of the student involved has not been publicly released, the charges confirm the individual is under 19. The personal impact of these events extends to her family life as well. Her husband, Drew Adams, filed for divorce shortly after her resignation and is seeking full custody of their son, Parker. The two had been married for 15 years, and both were involved in the school athletic program. Drew serves as the boys basketball coach at the same school, a position he assumed in April of last year.

In a previous statement to the Cullman Tribune, Drew had spoken positively about their shared professional lives. He said, “I rarely got to see Parker or Paige many weeknights this past season because we were always playing at separate places. Now we can be at the same place on a nightly basis.” That dynamic has clearly changed in the wake of the indictment.

While coaches should be mentors and guides, cases like these make trust difficult, especially as others receive 20-year sentences for sexually abusing the minors they coached.
