Amazon just removed its new AI-generated Video Recaps feature from Prime Video without saying a word. Users spotted that the summaries were full of wrong information. This is a bad look for a feature that was supposed to help people catch up on shows before starting a new season.
According to Engadget, the trouble started when viewers noticed the AI was getting basic facts wrong. The biggest problem showed up in the recap for the hit show Fallout. That summary had errors about the plot and even the setting of the series. If you’re using a recap to get caught up, getting false information is a serious issue.
Amazon launched Video Recaps in November. The idea was simple: give viewers a quick summary so they don’t have to remember every detail from past seasons. Many people take breaks between seasons or watch too many shows to keep track of everything. A good recap should remind you who betrayed who or where the main character ended up.
Amazon’s AI feature couldn’t get basic story facts right
When the feature was available, it seemed like a smart solution to a real problem. You could find the recaps in the Extras section on the web version. Some shows even had a recap button right on the main page. But the feature didn’t work well enough to be useful.
Now the season two page for Fallout doesn’t have that faulty recap anymore. In fact, all the shows Amazon was testing this feature on no longer have recaps available. This widespread removal shows Amazon pulled the entire feature while they try to fix it. The test group included popular shows like Bosch, Upload, The Rig, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
This isn’t Amazon’s first problem with AI on Prime Video. The company seems eager to use AI across all its services, but the results aren’t always good. Recently, Amazon offered AI-generated English dubs for some anime shows. Those dubs were also pulled after users complained about poor quality and accuracy. It’s not the first time Amazon’s response surprised customers when things didn’t go as planned.
Amazon does still use AI successfully for generating recaps of long book series available through the Kindle Store. Text summaries are easier to automate than video content that needs deep understanding of complex plots and settings.
Amazon hasn’t said anything about why the video recaps disappeared. The silence suggests they know they have a major technical problem to solve. The idea was great, but a recap that gets the story wrong is useless. While some celebrities have faced bizarre public moments during simple errands, Amazon’s quiet removal of this feature shows they’re trying to avoid further embarrassment. For now, if you want to remember what happened last season, you’ll have to watch actual clips or check fan sites instead.
