Police say a man out of prison for a week fired toward a Baltimore youth football field over a parking spot, killing a 12-year-old girl

The man charged with killing a 12-year-old girl at a Baltimore youth football game had walked out of a Maryland prison eight days before the shooting. Tyree Reynolds, 23, is accused of opening fire during a dispute in a parking lot beside the field. State corrections officials have now confirmed the date of his release.

According to Fox, Reynolds faces 30 criminal counts that include murder and attempted murder. The charges stem from the shooting at a youth football homecoming game at Leon Day Park in northwest Baltimore. Khloe Ishway, 12, died from injuries. Reynolds has not been convicted of any charge in the case, as the allegations come from police and newly obtained court documents.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said the suspect left state custody after completing a five-year term. However, court records indicate he was still on probation for that conviction at the time of the shooting. The 23-year-old waived his bond hearing and appeared by video in a wheelchair, with his leg wrapped in a soft cast.

Investigators say the gunfire followed an exchange of words in the parking lot

Court documents say surveillance video captured Reynolds opening fire on two men in the lot next to the football field after he appeared to exchange words with them. The city’s police commissioner previously said the dispute began over a parking spot. Investigators wrote that the suspect reached into a backpack, removed a firearm and began firing toward the two unidentified men.

The weapon appeared to be a short-barreled rifle, according to the documents. One of the men reportedly returned fire and struck Reynolds in the ankle. However, investigators wrote that it was the 23-year-old who fired in the direction of the football field. Four victims were shot there, including Khloe.

A medical examiner recovered a rifle projectile from the girl’s body, the documents state. Investigators wrote that it was consistent with cartridge casings recovered from the spot where the suspect was allegedly seen firing. The filings do not name either of the two men he was allegedly shooting at.

Court records show three arrests in 2021, when the Baltimore man was 18. He was first arrested for possession of a handgun and was granted pre-trial release after challenging his detention. Before he was sentenced in that case, he was arrested again over an alleged assault and then over a separate shooting that summer.

The assault case was never prosecuted, according to the records. Reynolds was originally charged with attempted murder over the 2021 shooting and later pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and a firearms violation. He received 15 years in prison followed by three years of probation, and he was freed last month as a judge had suspended all but five years.

The corrections department said he served that term in full. A spokesperson said the agency is “heartbroken by the tragic death of 12-year-old Khloe Ishway and the injuries to innocent bystanders.” The statement added that Reynolds served the five years “day for day” before he was released.

Baltimore police have not said whether they have identified the man believed to have shot Reynolds, as a spokesperson would only say the case “remains open and active.” In a separate recent case, police say an Iowa man fired at drivers on I-35 and then shot at two people who stopped to check on him.

Khloe’s mother, Kristin Reese, reacted to the arrest at a candlelight vigil at the park, saying, “Thank God.” She told the outlet she had learned the news on social media and was grateful that someone came forward. Reese also said she believes police will find the second person they are looking for.

Reynolds is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on November 4, and detectives are expected to keep searching for the additional suspect in the meantime.
