Nintendo Wii U a Single Player Console?

Nintendo recently revealed that the Wii U will only support a single touchscreen controller because of matters of price. Nintendo recently stated that the technology is available for more than one controller to work with the system, but it would be far too expensive for consumers to stomach. Satoru Iwata made the claim earlier to Kotaku, where he announced that Nintendo wasn't 'asking customers to buy multiple Wii U controllers'.

"In the future, we may look at what other opportunities there are for gameplay and, how having two of those controllers might create fun or interesting new styles of play, but of course in doing that, it would require a consumer to purchase an additional controller," he told shareholders. "Therefore, we would need to carefully consider how we could create such an experience and, potentially, how we could ensure that there would be enough value within that experience for the consumer to accept that cost and make that purchase."

It's already been known that the system will be able to make use of the Nintendo Wii controllers from previous consoles, but with only one new controller per unit, is the Wii U really only a Wii HD? There's likely much that needs to be detailed about the console before passing judgement. Nintendo's a creative company that has proved time and time again that their ability to think outside of the box resonates with consumers, but to a fanbase that enjoys the social aspects of gaming as much as the original Nintendo Wii's audience, getting to swallow the fact that only one centerpiece controller will come with the new console could be the toughest challenge they'll face.

BULL*SHI*T! A new smash bros was announced and Mario Kart is probably already being developed. I doubt it’ll be a solely online experience. Maybe it will support 1 wiiu controller, but will probably integrate the wii motes (which is still a pretty bad next gen dealbreaker). Here’s hoping that Nintendo clarifies all their rumours. The way things are going it seems like even the devs up in Nintendo don’t even know how this console is setup :/

They already said it will support 5 controllers but the thing is that will likely only support 1 Wii U controller. Man these articles have no research put into them.

What do you expect them to do other than write in plain english. “Nintendo recently stated that the technology is available for more than one controller to work with the system, but it would be far too expensive for consumers to stomach”. Less time trolling website titles, more time learning how to read.

      ROFLMFAO,

Microsoft needs to take a long time on the Xbox 720, how about eternity! Fing go away, do software like Atari and Sega. Sell the rights to your games and then M$ can take it’s rightful stand as BITCH of the gaming industry.

      M$ scams
M$ will force you to upgrade
      M$ is the bitch here.

Give me Wii U and PS3/PS4 and my PC. No need for a freaking pay to play system that has no features and has no true exclusives since they are all on PC.

The console isnt even close to being final yet. Nintendo has plenty of time to make changes to the wii u before it launches in 2012. And its going to support 2 wii u controllers. Reggie Fils-Aime said so in an interview. I have a strong feeling that this console is going to be the next generation winner. Nintendo always is. And since its going hd finally with 50% more powering graphics than the xbox 360 and ps3, this console is going to crush the other two components. Im sure of it. Nintedno will no longer be a little wimpy videogame company. Its going into the hardcore gaming. Nintendo will change its label next year. No one will look at Nintendo the same after this console launches. I assure you.

I am not that sure. MS and Sony will release new consoles. I believe they will feature dual GPUs. If that is the case then it all depends of developers. If they keep creating new multi-platform games compatible with the slower console, in this case the Wii U, then Nintendo will win since there will be no point in buying an expensive PS4 or XBOX 720 for 700 bucks if game will look basically the same. On the other hand if developers ditch support of the Wii U and move on to exploit the raw power of the most powerful platforms, then Nintendo could be in big trouble. Maybe the fate of the Wii U could be a combination of both, at the beginning it could be very popular but it could fail in the long run once the install base of PS4 and 720 is large enough to move to more powerful game engines the Wii U will be unable to support.

ya that is true, but………… Nintendo does not make consoles that have long life spands like MS and sony. The ps3 and xbox 360 are 10 year plan consoles. I mean the 360 came out 7 years ago… thats enough time for Nintendo to make 2 consoles and make double the profit. By the time the Ps4 and 720 come out Nintendo will already be working on there next home console. Ya Nintendo is a little bit behind in graphics wise but who really cares? Its Nintendo. People dont expect Nintendo to have the best of the best graphical images. And in my opinion, by Nintendo going with HD graphics with their wii u and having 50% more powering graphics than the 360 and ps3, this is a huge catch up to the other consoles….. If sony and MS want to keep up with Nintendo then they are going to have to focus on 5 year plans instead of 10 year plans. So whenever the 720 and ps4 do come out, Nintendo will have there “Nintendo Revolution” ready for launch within a couple years after those consoles launch. After that Nintendo will be ahead in graphics leaving the others behind. Trust me. Nintendo will eventually be the one ahead in graphics wise. Time will tell us.

Firstly, the Wii U’s compatibility with all the Wii’s controllers along with the new options of this “new controller” mean that the Wii U will have more controllers and control options than any other console. So any console player , casual, party gamer, hardcore or whatever will have their preferred control option available.

Secondly, the new options for control and gameplay this “new controller” brings are in addition to all of those already existing, not instead of them.

I think Nintendo’s mistake was to call this new controller a “new controller”. It is a second screen and that is what they should have announced it as.

This “second screen” allows gameplay to be moved away from the main T.V. screen, you can see how this would appeal to many families or even those who want to take their game to bed.

The “second screen” allow video-calls to anyone who has another Wii U, that is a great feature, I’m hoping it will allow conference video-calls too.

The “second screen” will allow players to monitor what their friends are doing online, even when the T.V. is being used.

We have seen some examples of how the “second screen” can be used in asymmetric gameplay, imagine a mature version of Mii-hunt, where the “second screen” player is an alien and upto four other players (Wiimote and nunchuck or classic controllers) are colonial marines on a bug-hunt, or vice versa.

You can draw directly on to the “second screen”, no doubt this will be used mostly for kids, but the equivalent tech for P.C.’s is massively expensive, try looking at Cintiq tablets.

You can use the “second screen” to play puzzle games, or browse online, while someone else uses the T.V. another plus for families who want to monitor their kids online activity.

I’m sure devs will come up with lots of interesting ways to use this “second screen”, but it will continue to be with disappointment as long as Nintendo saddle it with the label of a “new controller”.

I think to say nintendo always comes out on top would be an exaggeration. I’m pretty sure the gamecube, n64 and snes all lost out to their rivals. Not sure bout the snes I was only a lad but everyone I knew had a mega drive.

the Wii U controller is going to be at least $100, probably more since they already stated it will be super expensive.

Nintendo is great but this is the first console war they won since Super Nintendo and even that was really close.

    NES – 61.91 Million
    SNES – 49.1 Million
    N64 – 32.9 Million
    Game Cube – 21.74 Million
    Wii – 86.01 Million

Nintendo total units sold since 1983: 251.66 Million

    Sega Master – 13 Million
    Sega Genesis – 40.8 Million
    Sega Saturn – 9.5 Million
    Sega Dreamcast – 10.6 Million

Total Sega Units Sold since 1985: 73.9 Million

    PS1 – 102 Million
    PS2 – 150 Million
    PS3 – 52 Million3

Playstation total units sold since 1994: 304 Million

    Xbox – 24 Million
    360 – 54 Million

Xbox Total units sold since 2001: 78 Million

So nintendo is great, but no one is as great as Playstation, who has the top two spots of best selling consoles of all time and have sold way way more in much less time.

And did you see the butt pounding PS handed out the last gen? I’m almost happy that there is some real competition this gen. NEVER has every console sold so many units.

    PS2 = 150 Million, Xbox = 24 Million, Game Cube = 21.74 Million

So even if you add up all of Xbox and All of Gamecube PS2 still sold more than 104 million units more than those two combined.

Nintendo doesn’t win every time, especially since Playstation has been here.

I guess we could say Nintendo won this one. But it’s not over, Wii is underpowered and leaving the race early.

In the end of this generation, with PS3 outselling 360 and Wii dropping out early (Wii was never really a contender, they don’t have the same games) the PS3 wins. Better hardware, best selling (month for month, better than 360, continues to outsell 360 every week…vgchartz.com.
