President Donald Trump will not say no to running for president a third time. This goes against the Constitution, which says a person can only be elected president twice. His recent comments have raised questions about whether he plans to follow this rule.
The issue started about four weeks ago during a meeting with congressional leaders before the government shutdown. People at the meeting saw something strange on Trump’s desk: red hats with “Trump 2028” written on them. Trump then posted pictures of these hats on his social media. He even shared a fake AI video of himself putting one of these hats on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
According to MSNBC, Trump talked about this again on Monday. Reuters reported that he said he would not run for vice president in 2028. He called that idea “too cute” and said voters would not like it. But when reporters asked if he might run for president again, he gave a different answer. He claimed he has not thought about 2028 yet. Then he said his poll numbers are the best they have ever been. He finished by saying, “I would love to do it.”
He Keeps Bringing This Up And It Is Not A Joke Anymore
This is not the first time Trump has talked about a third term. Back in March, he told NBC News he was “not joking” about running again. Two months after that, he spoke to American troops in Qatar. He told them, “As you know, we won three elections, OK? And some people want us to do a fourth. I don’t know, I’ll have to think about that.”
But there is really nothing to think about here. The 22nd Amendment says very clearly that no one can be elected president more than twice. Trump and some of his supporters think there might be a way around this. Legal experts say there is not. The rule is simple and clear.
Most Americans do not want this either. A poll showed that 80 percent of people do not want Trump to serve a third term. Even with this strong opposition, Trump keeps talking about it like it might actually happen.
A law professor from UCLA named Scott Cummings talked about this on The Rachel Maddow Show in March. He pointed out that leaders in other countries who attack their own government systems do not just leave office when their time is up. Cummings said these leaders do what they do because they want “to stay in power permanently.”
No one knows if Trump really plans to break the Constitution or if he just likes getting attention. One thing is clear, he will not stop bringing up this idea. Those strange red hats from a few weeks ago now make a lot more sense.
