Christian Shaffer went to get a regular haircut at a barber shop in Southern Indiana, but he left with some really bad news. His barber noticed his ears were turning bright red and told him she thinks he’s allergic to beer. For someone who loves drinking beer, this was the worst thing he could hear.
According to Bro Bible, Shaffer is a musician who posts videos on TikTok under the name @christianshaffersmusic. Right after his haircut, he sat in his car and recorded a video explaining what happened. He looked very upset and said he just got some terrible news that he didn’t want to believe.
While sitting in the barber’s chair, Shaffer felt his ears getting hot. He asked his barber if they looked red, and she confirmed they were warm and irritated. Then she asked him if he had a beer before coming in. When he said yes, she told him he’s probably allergic to beer. Shaffer was shocked and couldn’t believe it at first, but he admitted his ears had been turning red for weeks whenever he drank.
Beer allergies are rare but sensitivities are common
True beer allergies are not very common, but many people have sensitivities to ingredients in beer. Most beers contain wheat, barley, yeast, or hops. If someone is sensitive to any of these ingredients, they can get itching, hives, or red skin like what happened to Shaffer.
Shaffer posted his video on TikTok and it got over 84,000 views. Many people left comments sharing their own strange reactions to beer. One person said the redness starts on their chest and goes down to their knees, so they switched to drinking whiskey instead. Beer-related incidents can lead to unexpected and shocking situations in public. Another person said they’re extremely allergic and their whole body reacts the same way.
“It is most likely the kind of yeast they use in that beer. Issues like you’re having, stomach issues, and even how bad hangovers are can be contributed from the kind of yeast that’s in the beer. It’s probably just a low quality,” one person theorized.
Many people said their reaction depends on which beer brand they drink. One person said their hands swell when they drink Coors Light, which was their favorite for 20 years, so they had to switch to Yuengling. Others said specific beers cause problems while other brands don’t bother them at all.
Some people have found ways to deal with these reactions. They avoid cheaper flavored drinks that have artificial colors. Some people even carry antihistamine medicine like Benadryl when they go out drinking, just in case they have a bad reaction. Speaking of bars, strange visitors at drinking establishments can sometimes surprise everyone.
Shaffer now has to either try different beer brands to find one that doesn’t make his ears red, or he might need to carry Benadryl with him. His barber gave him important medical information, even though he really didn’t want to hear it.
