Internet sensation Domino’s driver receives a wholesome $15,000 windfall, only for a banking fiasco to strike

Just when you thought the heartwarming story of Dean, the “Delightful Domino’s Driver,” couldn’t get any wilder, a banking fiasco has thrown a wrench into his unexpected windfall: Venmo has permanently shut down his account, as reported by BroBible. While Dean says he did receive most of the incredible $15,000 sent to him, not all of it made it through, which is just awful for him and his family.

The whole thing started with a viral video, racking up over 3.9 million views, posted by Domino’s customer Ashley Johnson. She shared a recording of her husband, Spencer, calling their local Domino’s in Syracuse, New York. You might expect a complaint, right? Well, Spencer was actually calling to give their delivery driver, Dean, an extra tip.

When Dean picked up, he had this super cheery attitude, but you could tell he got a little nervous when Spencer started asking about his delivered order. He was probably bracing for a complaint, but Spencer quickly cleared things up. “You know what’s freaking hilarious?” Spencer asked. “I was just calling to see if I could up my tip to you.”

Dean explained that once a tip is placed, you can’t actually change it, but he definitely appreciated the compliment

Not one to give up on rewarding good service, Spencer then asked, “Do you have a Venmo?” Dean confirmed he did, excusing himself to grab his phone and confirm his handle. While he was gone, Spencer told Ashley, “He’s a super nice guy.” Dean came back, shared his handle, and the two even chatted about March Madness, discovering they were both BYU fans. They hung up with a mutual “Go Cougs.” Ashley later mentioned in a follow-up video, “If he didn’t have that positivity and that attitude that we very much needed that night, we would not have thought to call.”

The internet absolutely loved Dean’s vibe. People in the comments section were equally tickled by his demeanor and started sending him their own Venmo tips. Ashley mentioned that the Venmos were still rolling in, and Dean was even commenting back on every single one. It just goes to show you the power of genuine kindness.

Dean, who isn’t used to being on camera, later made a follow-up video, reading from notes to thank the many donors. “Thank you for so much for your many gifts given, which now total over $15,000,” he said. “A week ago I was so grateful just to have the extra tip from Spencer. Now my family and I are overwhelmed with a world of generosity.” Dean, a father of five, added in a comment that the money is going to pay off debt. He said, “No toys, upgrades, or vacations. Debt pay off was the reason I chose to work for Domino’s 6 years ago and that is what your awesome gifts will be used for!”

Unfortunately, that’s where the good news took a bit of a turn. Dean revealed in another update that Venmo had permanently shut down his account. He did get most of what was sent to him, but not all of it, which is a real shame given his plans for the money. He also warned people that fraudulent accounts impersonating him had started popping up. He urged anyone looking to send money to verify they had the right account before doing so.

This whole situation really highlights how crucial tips are for delivery drivers. Many people don’t realize that food delivery drivers actually make a huge chunk of their income from tips. In 2024, data analytics company Gridwise found that delivery drivers made 53.4% of their total earnings from tips on average. For grocery delivery workers, it was 45.7%. The base pay from platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats can be as low as $2 or $3 per delivery, meaning tips aren’t just extra; they’re essentially the job itself.

So, how much should you actually be tipping? The old pizza delivery math doesn’t quite apply anymore. Those delivery and service fees you see in apps usually go to the platform or the restaurant, not directly to your driver. Drivers are covering their own gas and expenses out of pocket.

Experts recommend starting at 15% to 20% for third-party delivery orders. Some even suggest a $5 minimum, no matter how small the order. You should also remember that a small order total shouldn’t mean a tiny tip; the driver makes the same trip either way. It’s also a great idea to tip more in bad weather since they’re out there so you don’t have to be. Also, if you live on a high floor or your building’s elevator is out, consider adding a little extra since the driver can’t know that beforehand.

The internet’s reaction to Dean’s initial story was overwhelmingly positive. One top comment read, “And then Dean replied to every single Venmo he received with a kind comment.” Another person said, “I sent him a tip too. You can just tell he’s so sweet.” Someone else wrote, “Could tell the second he answered the phone that his customer service was impeccable.”
