Police arrived at a sports star’s home after a 911 hang-up, but his fiancée’s allegations have now led to a shocking arrest

Philadelphia sports talk radio personality Mike Missanelli was arrested on Wednesday morning for allegedly assaulting his fiancée, according to police in the suburb of Lower Merion. This is a pretty shocking development, especially given his long and sometimes controversial history in the local media scene. Police received a 911 hang-up call just after midnight and quickly responded to an address in a neighborhood about nine miles away from Center City Philadelphia.

When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with Missanelli. He reportedly told them he and his fiancée had an argument, which escalated and resulted in a “scuffle,” according to the criminal complaint. Missanelli claimed his fiancée struck him in the chest during the exchange. This incident occurs amid high-profile legal consequences for domestic violence, such as influencer Cash Cartier being sentenced to 40 years in prison for the fatal assault of his girlfriend.

According to Daily Mail, his fiancée provided a different account of what transpired. She alleged that the argument was specifically about their engagement, and during the dispute, the radio host slapped her with an open hand. This alleged action, she claimed, led to a cut on her forehead and noticeable swelling on her ear. It’s a classic he-said-she-said situation, but with serious implications.

That ‘scuffle’ sounds a lot more serious now

Following the investigation, Missanelli was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment, specifically for subject other to physical contact. According to court records, he was held on $10,000 bail, which he has already posted. His next court appearance, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled for April 22. This legal process is just beginning, and it’s going to be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Missanelli is a known contributor to OnPattison, a Philadelphia sports news website, where he hosts a podcast. The Fideri News Network, which is OnPattison’s corporate parent, quickly became aware of the charges against him through various media reports. They released a statement on X, confirming the situation. “The Fideri News Network, corporate parent of OnPattison, became aware of the charges against Mike Missanelli this afternoon through media reports,” the statement read.

“In light of the nature of the allegations, Mike will not be a part of OnPattison Podcast during the legal process.” This standard move by media companies when talent faces serious allegations means we won’t be hearing from Mike Missanelli on that platform for a while. For those who have followed Philadelphia sports radio, Missanelli’s name is incredibly familiar.

He has had a long and often tumultuous career in the “City of Brotherly Love,” starting as a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer before making the jump to radio at 610 WIP. It was during his time at WIP that he first became known for controversial moments. He famously criticized Eagles kicker David Akers, calling him a “girl” and suggesting he wasn’t a “real athlete.” His tenure at WIP ultimately ended in 2006 under a cloud of controversy when he was fired after an alleged altercation with an on-site producer.

After leaving WIP, he briefly hosted a show on 93.3 WMMR. In January 2010, Missanelli found a new home at 97.5 The Fanatic, where he became a prominent voice for over a decade. However, even this period had its share of drama. In 2016, it was revealed that a longtime caller, “Dwayne from Swedesboro,” was actually a character created by his producer. Missanelli apologized for the fake caller and associated racial stereotypes, though he maintained he had no knowledge of the ruse.

Another memorable incident occurred in May 2020 during a heated debate over a racial incident in Central Park. The on-air tension was palpable; right before a commercial break, Missanelli was seen throwing his headset in anger. When the show returned to television, he and producer Tyrone Johnson were still yelling, and Missanelli appeared to be cursing at his co-host. This was a chaotic moment for viewers, especially since the show was simulcasted on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Despite these incidents, Missanelli stated in early 2022 that he had no plans to retire. However, on May 31, 2022, he announced on air that it would be his last show at 97.5 The Fanatic as the station opted to go in a “different direction.” After his departure, he joined Rush Street Interactive to represent Bet Rivers Network, where he hosts his biweekly Philadelphia sports podcast.

Beyond radio, Missanelli worked as sports director for PHL 17 from 2000 to 2003. He also had a weekly gig on 6 ABC but was fired in 2017 after making comments suggesting it was “unnatural” for a female broadcaster to call an NFL game.

More recently, he began serving as a panelist on the Jakib Sports Pond Lehocky Postgame Show.
