Earlier today, Nintendo announced that it would revising its Wii U sales projections downward due to a sluggish start for the console. While analysts have had mixed predictions about the Wii U, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities has been the most vocal with his predictions of failure for the company. It looks like Pachter was right though, the Wii U is apparently struggling, and he believes that Nintendo got it wrong this time around.
“I always thought Nintendo’s Wii U software forecast made no sense,” said the analyst. “The hardware guidance is disappointing , and there isn’t really anything that will get hardware moving other than a price cut. I think they got it wrong with this console, it just doesn’t capture the imagination the way that the Wii did.”
Unfortunately for Nintendo, things don’t get easier going forward in the eyes of this analyst. “The Wii U is not going to be very competitive if Sony and Microsoft launch comparable consoles at comparable prices. The early weakness will cause third party publishers to re-think support for the Wii U, and we might not see much support at holiday 2013.”
Last year, Pachter predicted that the Wii U would sell well in its initial launch, with sales slowing to trickle once the demand of core fans has been satisfied.
