Sony has had a pretty clear message about the PS4 since it’s reveal a few months back. They’ve made it clear that the PS4 is all about games and gamers, and today, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai echoed these exact sentiments at the D11 conference.
The PlayStation 4 starts with the gamer first
Hirai explained Sony’s core philosophy behind the PS4, and it’s one that starts with games. “I fundamentally believe that the initial market that we need to make sure we appeal to with any new platform… is really the gaming audience. They will be the supporters of your platform and they will help propel the installed base,” the CEO explained.
This isn’t to say that Sony won’t have other bells and whistles on the PS4 that will allow you to consume other entertainment. Hirai touched on these topics as well, saying that other entertainment options would be a big part of the PS4 also, but that Sony wants to make sure that everyone knows that PlayStation is a gaming first platform.
As for these other features “That’s after we establish the platform as a video game platform. We want to make sure that we are there for the gamers with our PS4 as well. They will go beyond this, but they’ll definitely start with gamer first,” Hirai said.
Hirai’s statements reinforce what many are saying in the gaming community right now using the details that we do know about the PS4. We’re just hoping that they don’t somehow screw it up and announce anti-consumer features on the new console. Right now, Sony couldn’t be an a better position with the PS4 and the public perception of the new console. Their competition, Microsoft and the Xbox One made headlines earlier today, when executives at the company told fans that they would be on clean-up duty at E3, introducing games, and hopefully clearing the air about some of the confusing features that the new console is speculated to have.
