By now we’ve all heard the DualShock has been redesigned for the PlayStation 4. The controller has underwent massive changes to address concerns from PlayStation fans, and one of those concerns was making it better for shooting games. Likely spurred on by the massive rise in popularity of shooters like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, and Killzone, Sony engineers went to work with shooter players in mind when making the new controller.
We wanted to make sure we had something much better for the genre
Speaking in a recent interview with Stuff, Sony’s Mark Cerny explained why the PS4 might just be the new console for shooter fans.
“Historically we have heard many times that our controllers have not been ideal for first-person shooters,” explained Cerny, “so we wanted to make sure we had something that would be much better for that genre. We tested the throw of the triggers, the position of the triggers, how much pressure it takes. We looked at the joysticks, the dead spot, we looked at convexity and concavity.” The engineer says that the DualShock 4 “feels extraordinarily natural.”
It’s not just considerations for the shooter crowd that could make the PS4 the defacto shooter console, the raw power behind the machine could come into play as well. In a another separate interview with DICE, Karl Magnus Troedsson told Game Informer that “More memory or more CPU or GPU power – whatever kind of power we get out of a machine – more is always better, especially for the kind of games that we build.”
