Xbox One DVR only records in 720p, at 30fps

After recently announcing that capture cards will still work with the Xbox One, some bad news about the in-built Game DVR has surfaced.

As part of IGN’s ‘Ask Microsoft Anything‘ program , Microsoft have confirmed that the Game DVR only captures footage at 720p, 30fps. This means that games that play at a higher resolution – like Forza Motorsport 5, which will be in 1080p, 60 fps – will not look as pristine when played back or captured using the Xbox One’s Game DVR.

It’s worth noting that YouTube down-scales higher frame rates to 30fps anyway, so the frame rate drop will probably go unnoticed, but a loss of picture fidelity would still be noticeable when viewing in high quality. Clips uploaded to the cloud by the Game DVR are attached to your gamertag, so when looking at someone’s gamertag you can view their gaming highlights (a bit like Halo 3’s File Share.)

Other interesting pieces of information to come from IGN’s article include:

  • Gamerpics are now in full 1080p rather than 64×64
  • Games released on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One will have separate achievements
  • Avatars will be returning to Xbox One, with some improvements
