The first batch of Xbox One consoles will require you to perform an update before you’ll be able to use it. According to Marc Whitten, a day-one patch for the Xbox One will take about 15-20 minutes for most users.

Whitten told IGN that Microsoft is “optimizing the Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible,” but did not give any details as to what this day one patch would be adding or taking from the OS.

“We’re still finalizing the details,” said Whitten. Hopefully Microsoft gets this right when November rolls around. They should have learned an important lesson from Nintendo’s launch of the Wii U which saw a massive off-putting patch at launch that had some players unable to play the console for hours after their purchase.
