PS4 graphics superior over Xbox One is a small perception challenge, says Microsoft

Since last year’s launch of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 there has been a hot topic of conversation among fans of both consoles. Seemingly, the additional raw power under the casing of the PlayStation 4 allows developers to more easily make their games at higher resolution and frame rate. But are the PS4 graphics superior over Xbox One? Not according to Microsoft.

We’ve seen a number of third party games release with greater specs on the PlayStation 4, and Microsoft isn’t convinced that it’s anything other than a “perception challenge,” according to Harvey Eagle, marketing boss for Xbox UK.

Speaking with Computer and Video Games in a recent interview, Eagle says: “If you put third-party games side-by-side that are running at slightly different resolutions or frame rates, then unless you are using a screen that’s more than 60 inches big, I defy you to really see the difference.”

So how is Microsoft looking to change this? Well, eventhough you can’t tell the difference, according to Eagle, the company is looking to dedicate real resources to the non-problem. “There is some GPU power that can be allocated to Kinect that we’re now freeing up for developers if they want to increase the fidelity of their games.”

Eagle isn’t necessarily saying anything in the interview that we haven’t heard before. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed the freeing of the GPU bandwidth earlier this year when the Kinect was unbundled from the Xbox One. One of the first big games to be taking advantage of this additional horsepower on the Xbox One is Destiny. According to Spencer, the third party shooter from Bungie should launch at parity on both the Xbox One and PS4 in September, due to the developers making use of these additional resources.
