After allowing free online play in the last generation with their PlayStation 3, Sony made a big decision with their PlayStation 4 by requiring a subscription to PS Plus to play online, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live. For those that haven’t subscribed and would like a glimpse into the online multiplayer found on PlayStation 4, Sony is holding a free online multiplayer weekend.
Starting on Friday, September 26 at 12:01 am PT through Sunday, September 28 at 11:59 pm PT, gamers who own a PlayStation 4 will be able to play any games online for no cost, not including games like Final Fantasy XIV that require a separate subscription of course.
This free weekend does not give you access to the other PS Plus features, such as the Instant Game Collection, so you will have to sign up fully to try them out.
The launch PS4s came with a free trial to the service, but those after did not. As a result, even getting to try it out required one to pay for the service, unless you found a free trial elsewhere, such as with Destiny. That’s what makes this weekend so good for those that haven’t bothered to sign up or may just be getting the console this weekend, especially if you are picking up games like Destiny or FIFA 15 that releases this week.
