The Assassin’s Creed series has been well known for doing interesting things in the open-world environments it presents in the various Assassin’s Creed games and Assassin’s Creed Unity will be no different. In addition to having the majority of the story missions play out in the open world, there are also a large variety of different side missions for you to play around with. Ubisoft has been extremely experimental when it came down to side missions in Assassin’s Creed. They revamped the system in Assassin’s Creed 3 before revamping it again in Black Flag to be much more naval oriented.
In Assassin’s Creed Unity, now that we are back in familiar territory not too dissimilar to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (one big city, all ground, no ships), Ubisoft is again changing up the formula to something some of us veteran Asassin’s Creed players may be more familiar with. This, however, doesn’t mean they are stagnating as they have introduced brand new side missions, as they have detailed in the video below:
Murder Mysteries
New to the Assassin’s Creed series is this new type of side mission. It looks to be trying to do a Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments, but much more condensed and simplified. You will explore the surroundings of a murdered body, look for clues with Eagle Vision and interrogate suspects (although it’s not entirely clear if you do any actual interrogations as opposed to just having conversations, or perhaps even Sam Fisher-esque “interrogations”). Solve the case and you will get upgrades for some of your weapons.
Paris Stories
This is just basically an amalgamation of all the beat-ups, chase downs and assassination contracts you had before in previous Assassin’s Creed games except that in Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft promises to make all the missions highly involved with cut-scenes and a coherent narrative (as opposed to only barely trying with some words on the screens in the AC2 trilogy or not trying at all in AC3).
Treasure Hunts
Not too much is known about how this works or how this differs to just looking for chests in previous Assassin’s Creed games, but at least they didn’t get rid of it in Assassin’s Creed Unity!
Heists
We’ve previously covered heists before in some detail, but suffice to say the name is pretty self-evident. You will be breaking into a highly secure place to steal some loot. Much of it will be randomized, thus you will be unlikely to have the same experience more than once and you will be able to play heists with friends co-operatively over multiplayer.
The video also introduces what will be Assassin’s Creed Unity’s Monteriggioni Auditore Mansion with the Cafe Theatre (make sure to pronounce this in your best French accent “tee-at-te“) where you will be storing all your weapons and armors.
If you can’t wait to sink your teeth into the promised “dozens of hours of gameplay” that Assassin’s Creed Unity will provide, fear not for Ubisoft has produced this bizarre web/social/ARG thing which you can access right here. You will be able to “create” your own Arno as well as watch some “exclusive” in-game cut-scenes.
