PS3 system update 4.48 is out today as well as update 3.57 for PS Vita. However, both consoles remove functionality with the Facebook app.
That’s right, the new updates actually remove functionality over something as common as the Facebook app. This is sad news for people that used Facebook on these consoles. Sony previously removed support for YouTube for the PS Vita last year. Users had to use YouTube on the PS Vita’s browser instead.
I downloaded the PS Vita update first. I can confirm that the Facebook app no longer works, sadly. The icon is still there, but you get a message saying that the functionality is no longer available. I guess you can log into Facebook via the Vita’s browser much like how you have to do for YouTube as well.
It’s kind of sad that Sony is dropping app support for things as popular as Facebook and YouTube. The apps made it easier to access things. Using the browser to browse YouTube and Facebook on the PS Vita is clunky. This is a sign that Sony is moving on to newer devices.
Sony must be concentrating all efforts on the PS4 right now. It’s worth mentioning the Facebook app is also disabled if you have the PS TV device too. You can always download Facebook on a smartphone or tablet if you need to talk to your friends on a handheld device.
