With Fallout 4 now out and in gamers’ hands, all eyes are on Bethesda’s other major franchise, The Elder Scrolls. Most fans assumed that the next entry in the fantasy RPG series was already underway, but a recent tweet from Bethesda’s Pete Hines put those hopes to bed.

In response to a fan asking if Bethesda’s other big games would take focus away from The Elder Scrolls 6, Hines said “we aren’t working on TES6 at the moment.” This does seem to go against other statements that have been made, specifically one from E3 2016 where Todd Howard said that development on The Elder Scrolls 6 was underway.

However, after that comment Pete Hines told fans that TES6 was “years and years” away, which seems to back up that the team is at least not actively working on the project at this time. Most likely, Bethesda and its developers are still hard at work on Fallout 4’s DLC, though some have likely moved on to new projects.

Bethesda did make a lot of big announcements at their E3 Showcase, though what their main development team is working on right now is still a bit of a mystery. Dishonored 2 and Prey are big games, but they aren’t being done by the same group that made Skyrim, Fallout 4, or would theoretically be behind The Elder Scrolls 6.

It looks like fans will just have to keep waiting and hoping for an unveiling at some point in the future. From everything that we’re hearing out of Bethesda, it seems like it won’t be presented to the public for some time, as they’ll need to actually get development going before they can give us an idea of what the game is, and how it will come together. Maybe E3 2018…or 2019…ok, maybe 2020. Either way, fans will be ready, as The Elder Scrolls is already one of the most successful franchises of all time.
