By now you’re probably well aware of how hard of a game that Team Ninja’s Nioh is, causing many players to redo sections of the game dozens of times before finally getting through. However, the fact that the game allows you to summon another player for co-op play may lead you to believe that you can get through the entire game that way, but you can’t.
The game’s creative director Tom Lee recently did an interview where he discussed the decision to not allow people to co-op through the whole game. He said “You cannot co-op through the entire game because that would make it too easy for players to beat the game. We want players to experience Nioh in how it was intended to be. We allowed players to co-op anytime in the last trial demo only because of the limited stages and time to try out the demo.”
While this is definitely bad news for those who were hoping to blaze through the game with a friend, it’s understandable why the developer decided to do this. The sheer challenge of the game is its defining feature, and allowing you to bring along a friend all the time to get through it would diminish that. There are also points in the game where an NPC joins you in battle, and those sections are nowhere near as challenging as the others. Co-op’s cool, but Nioh is at its best when you go it alone.
The game’s difficulty has been something that has been received well by critics and consumers alike, with the game receiving rave reviews across the board. We also had a blast with the game, giving it 4.5/5 stars in our own review of it.
While Nioh does have a season pass that will be bringing new content to the game at a price, there is some free content that will be coming to the game in the near future. The developer has previously announced that a PvP mode will be added to the game at some point, though we still don’t have a concrete release date for it.
