NPD June: PS4 and Tekken 7 Lead Sales

The NPD Group has revealed the sales data for the month of June in North America, with PS4 becoming the best selling console and Tekken 7 the game that reported the highest revenue. It was a particularly strong month for PS4, with Sony’s console reporting the biggest June yet in the territory. The sales increase was driven by the new PS4 Gold model, which was released on June 9.

Together with Nintendo Switch, whose stock issues are limiting its sales, PS4 drove hardware sales up to a 27% year-over-year increase, while software revenue stayed largely stable in June, only up 1% for consoles and 2% for PC. Nintendo’s console is seen as largely responsible to the spike of 19% in hardware revenue compared to the first half of 2016. However, the move to home consoles is sinking the portable market, down 40% from last year. It’s obvious that analysts prefer to consider Nintendo Switch as part of the home console segment rather than the handheld machines.

Bandai Namco’s Tekken 7 took the crown as the game with the highest revenue reported, with Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy making a strong debut at number 4 with only two days of sales, and becoming the first game of the series to reach the top 5 since the third game for the original PlayStation. It’s also worth noting that N. Sane Trilogy’s reduced price likely hurt its position in a chart that is based on revenue.

Nintendo Switch exclusive ARMS also had a strong debut at number 5, followed by other Nintendo titles The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

While games like Grand Theft Auto V and Overwatch proved yet again their staying power, Bethesda’s Prey completely disappeared from the lists.
