Sony has disclosed its financial report for the second quarter of the current fiscal year, revealing a strong performance across all divisions of the company -including the troubled Sony Pictures- and updated shipment numbers for PlayStation 4.The company as a whole reported sales of $18.25 billion, up 22.1% from last year, while income revenue increased a stunning 364% to $1.8 billion.

The Game and Network Services division, ruled by the PlayStation brand, solidifies its position as the main engine of the electronics giant, posting sales of $3.92 billion, which is more than double than the numbers from the same July-September period last year. Sony links this increase to rising software sales both physical and digital, as well as more hardware sales. The PS4 shipped 4.2 million units in the past four months, putting the total number up to 67.5 million worldwide.

The console certainly looks set to make a strong performance in the upcoming months thanks to multiple bundles linked to best selling titles like Gran Turismo Sport, Call of Duty: WWII, Star Wars: Battlefront II, or Monster Hunter: World in Japan. As for the upcoming software releases, check out the biggest announcements made during the past Paris Games Week conference.

This good result has made Sony increase the PS4 shipments forecast in one million for the rest of the fiscal year, now expecting to distribute 19 million consoles in the coming months, which would put the total up to 79 million. The profit forecast for the company as a whole has also revised positively 20% to a record $5.6 billion.

Perhaps one of the key points for this strong performance is the recovery of the problematic film division, Sony Pictures, which for a long time has been a drain in the company’s revenue from gaming and other divisions. The good box office results of Spider-Man: Homecoming has made the division report earnings of $68 million, compared to $32 million of last year.
