PlayStation Experience Is A No Show For 2018

Were you looking forward to PlayStation Experience later this December? Well, bad news: Sony has announced there won’t be one.

The comes via Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden during today’s PlayStation Blogcast who said:

“For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment to some people, but we have decided not to hold PlayStation Experience. We won’t have it in the States this year. The reasons behind that really are, we don’t have—we have a lot of progress that we’re making in our games, and we’re seeing that coming out—now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we’re looking down into 2019 into games like Dreams and Days Gone, but we wouldn’t have enough to bring people all together in some location in North America to have that event. We don’t want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it, so we have—it was a hard decision—but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience.”

Honestly speaking, this is the right move from Sony.

As you might recall from earlier this year, the worst thing about Sony’s E3 presentation were the awkward transitions that came between each game announcement. The games themselves, however, were fantastic and we have confirmed release dates for many of them. In fact, some of them are coming as early as next year.

With so much of Sony’s upcoming titles out in the open, it wouldn’t make any sense to hold an event that would likely just cover material that fans already knew about. Layden did make note of Dreams and Days Gone, but those two games (along with whatever else Sony might be working on) aren’t enough to warrant holding such a large event.

Unfortunately, this news does mean we probably won’t hear anything about a potential Mortal Kombat XI (yes, this is usually an E3 announcement) or any other announcements that typically come at that time.

On the other hand, Microsoft now doesn’t have to worry about any comparisons to its X018 event.
