How Does Wordle Work?

Wordle is a word-guessing game where you have six tries to get the word of the day. In each attempt, you have to input a five-letter word that will be judged based on the accuracy of the actual answer.

In each word put, the game will give you hints indicated by three different colored boxes. If the word you put has letters in grey boxes, this means that those letters do not exist in the answer. Letters in yellow boxes mean that they exist in the Word of the Day, but are not in the correct position. Finally, if you get a green box, that means the letter is correct both in terms of existence in the final word and placement.

The best strategy is to open up with a vowel-heavy word. Since there are only 5 (or 6 counting Y), you can easily rule out a bunch of words before throwing your chances away. You can also “cheat” the system by following some techniques we listed.

You can play Wordle for free on the New York Times website via a smart device or PC.
