A woman says she faked a car breakdown to skip her friend’s $2,500 bachelorette trip, and the bride burst out laughing when she confessed

A set of Reddit posts from r/confessions by FableOnProbation35 recently made its way to the BestofRedditorUpdates community for its surprisingly communicative resolution. The Redditor shared that earlier this year, her friend had announced a bachelorette trip to Scottsdale. Once the group chat started discussing options, she realized her share was “going to be almost $2,500.” She said she only had about $350 in her checking account and was skipping meals to pay rent.

The Redditor told the community, “I was so profoundly embarrassed to be the ‘broke friend’ dragging down the vibe that I couldn’t bring myself to tell the truth.” She admitted that three days before the flight, she called the bride with fake tears to say her car had broken down and the repairs had left her “completely wiped out financially.” She wrote that she then spent the weekend watching their Instagram stories feeling “pathetic” but relieved to not go into debt.

Later, the Redditor put up an update saying that she met the bride for coffee, and the first thing her friend did was check in on the repair. “Hearing her sound so worried about a fake repair job broke whatever was left of my ego,” she wrote. When she confessed, she said the bride “burst out laughing.” The Redditor learned that behind the Instagram stories, everyone had been “stressed about money” and “bickering over splitting bills,” which made the bride feel guilty and wish she’d stayed home too.

Commenters backed her decision to stay home

Many commenters told the original poster that she had done the right thing. One highlighted comment noted, “Anyone who actually cares about you wouldn’t want you going hungry for a weekend getaway.” Others noted that social media is “100% curated” and doesn’t really reflect “actual lived life.”

Many others shared their stories of the time they found themselves in a difficult situation or helped friends out. One user shared a story about a financially secure friend who corrected their assumption that “everyone could afford so much more than I could” by pointing out, “They’re in debt up to their eyeballs.” Another bridesmaid recently posted that she was dreading her friend’s bachelorette, partly because of a group chat that kept going off.

According to VeryWellMind, money disparities in friendship groups can often create anxiety, doubt, social withdrawal, guilt, and even end friendships, especially when one person’s spending power remains stagnant while others continue to escalate their lifestyle. To keep these dynamics from ruining connections, the outlet recommends being honest and setting boundaries early.

VeryWellMind advises communicating financial limits early to prevent resentment from building, since healthy friendships rely on mutual respect, not spending power. It also suggests low-cost group activities like cooking at home, taking a walk, or playing board games, and resisting judgment when a friend cannot participate because of cost.

At the end of her post, the Redditor noted that after her conversation with the bride, she had a realization: “It’s crazy how much energy we waste trying to look successful. It feels so good to finally stop hiding my eyes around her.”
