Alolan Forms of Kanto Pokémon Coming to Pokémon GO

One of the new editions to the Generation VII Pokémon games, 2016’s Sun and Moon, was the addition of Alolan forms. A number of Kanto Pokémon from the first Generation got new forms based on the environment of Generation VII’s region, Alola. Despite the fact that Pokémon GO currently only contains Pokémon from the first three Generations, and isn’t expected to include Gen VII creatures any time soon, the Alolan versions of Gen I Pokémon will apparently be coming to the game soon.

In an announcement on the official Pokémon GO website, it is stated that some Kanto Pokémon will start appearing in their Alolan forms in the game. A specific start date isn’t specified, with the post simply stating that these Alolan forms will start appearing “in the coming weeks.” It is currently unknown if Alolan forms will become a permanent fixture in the game, or if they will only appear for a limited amount of time during some sort of event.

For reference, here is a list of all Kanto Pokémon that have Alolan forms, as well as the type changes that their new forms have:

  • Rattata (Kanto form: Normal, Alolan form: Dark/Normal)
  • Raticate (Kanto form: Normal, Alolan form: Dark/Normal)
  • Raichu (Kanto form: Electric, Alolan form: Electric/Psychic)
  • Sandshrew (Kanto form: Ground, Alolan form: Ice/Steel)
  • Sandslash (Kanto form: Ground, Alolan form: Ice/Steel)
  • Vulpix (Kanto form: Fire, Alolan form: Ice)
  • Ninetales (Kanto form: Fire, Alolan form: Ice/Fairy)
  • Diglett (Kanto form: Ground, Alolan form: Ground/Steel)
  • Dugtrio (Kanto form: Ground, Alolan form: Ground/Steel)
  • Meowth (Kanto form: Normal, Alolan form: Dark)
  • Persian (Kanto form: Normal, Alolan form: Dark)
  • Geodude (Kanto form: Rock/Ground, Alolan form: Rock/Electric)
