There has been much speculation that Assassin’s Creed Origins would have more than one playable character, and even the developers teased as much, but players have not received confirmation until now. Revealed at Gamescom, Bayek’s wife Aya will be playable.

Players won’t have to worry that the gameplay is being split up between the two as Aya will only be playable for certain missions in the game, according to Game Informer. This is in contrast to the two main characters in Syndicate. While both Evie and Jacob had their own story missions, they were split up fairly evenly and players could choose freely who they wanted to roam around the world as. This does not seem to be the case in Origins.

“It is primarily Bayek’s story and journey, and this is the decision we had made because it was what we came to in terms of when we were building this experience, the narrative, the gameplay, this is the experience we wanted to create,” said Game Director Ashraf Ismail. “So, it was a choice that we made [not to split the campaign]. Having said that, we have other playable characters, we’re just not yet announcing who they are.”

The little tease at the end there, “we have other playable characters,” hints at some interesting possibilities. I know Assassin’s Creed fans have been wanting to have playable third-person modern day sections for years now, so this gives that idea a sliver of hope. Still, it is also likely we could be playing as another assassin in ancient Egypt related to Bayek, with fans theorizing it could be his children.

Unless Ubisoft reveals any more, fans will have to see for themselves come October 27 when Assassin’s Creed Origins launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
