Well this is definitely something we didn’t expect. The long forgotten first ever game by id Software has been brought back from the grave to become a free-to-play mobile game, and we’re not sure if this is what anyone was asking for. Still, it is a brand new title for the company, and it will soft launch this Summer.
For those who don’t know, the original Commander Keen was created by the founders of id Software back in 1990, becoming a big hit before they went onto create Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. The game is fondly known as one of the biggest reason people started to play PC games over consoles in the first place.
Now, with this iteration, Bethesda doesn’t even seem to be trying to hide the fact that it’s a blatant grab for special monetization methods. With its free-top-play genre, the obvious special cosmetic tie-in, its a little disappointing to see the game back in this state. Hopefully the company sees the error of this and makes some changes before it comes out. Commander Keen launches for mobile platforms this Summer.
