Sony announced this morning that the popular MMO DC Universe Online will going free-to-play on the PlayStation 3. Coming soon, PlayStation 3 users will be able to download the full game client from the PlayStation Store with no strings attached. The game is said to be entirely free to the PSN general public, while offering different access levels for those that choose to pay up for a premium subscription to the MMO.
Free Access will allow you to play the entire game for free, with all updates less any DLC packs that arrive. Premium Access will open to anyone that spends $5 in the in-game store. The premium tier grants additional benefits to enhance the DCUO experience. They are said to be extra inventory slots, bank slots, and other unannounced content. Finally, the Legendary Access will cost $14.99 per month. The monthly subscription will allow you to unlock the “maximum level of features and benefits” as well as access to all DLC packs.
If you are in the midst of a subscription term when the game goes free to play, you’ll automatically be upgraded to the Legendary Access for the remainder of your subscription, with Lifetime members getting automatic Legendary Access.
When exactly this new model will go into effect wasn’t detailed, but it’s “Coming Soon”.
