Soulcalibur fans can finally take up arms as their favorite weapon masters once more after Soulcalibur VI tomorrow. It’s been over six years since Soulcalibur V, so Project Soul has supposedly done everything they can to make the series’ return a triumphant one. The game is sporting an array of new and returning features, and it’s been polished up to a brilliant sheen. Our full thoughts can be found in our Soulcalibur VI review, but here’s a brief rundown of what’s on offer.
In terms of story, Soulcalibur VI is sort of a reboot of the first Soulcalibur, picking up immediately after the events of Soul Edge. Siegfried has just turned into Nightmare for the very first time, and Kilik, Xianghua, and Maxi embark on a journey to stop him. Alongside the main campaign is the brand new “Libra of Souls” mode, which takes the player on a separate journey to clean up the mess left by Siegfried’s transformation. It’s in this mode that players can create and use their own custom characters and forge their own tale. Beyond that, there’s also the traditional Arcade, Training, and online multiplayer modes for those who just want to dive straight into the combat.
A fair portion of the usual Soulcalibur roster is here, albeit it with both additions and absences. Some old favorites like Cassandra are still missing in action, but the addition of Geralt should help alleviate that a bit. Bandai-Namco has yet to announced the full list of DLC characters yet, so there’s still a decent chance for some fans to see their absent favorites make a return. In short, it look like there’s plenty here for a Soulcalibur fan to get excited about, even if the roster isn’t quite what many would like it to be. The series has been gone for quite awhile now, so hopefully what’s here will be enough to ensure its continued success.
Soulcalibur VI launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 19.
