Destiny 2 Is the Biggest Launch of the Year in the UK

Bungie’s Destiny 2 enters the UK charts straight to the top, achieving the highest sales of any other new release this year so far. While impressive, the number of physical copies sold is down a hefty 58% compared to the original Destiny’s first week. Now, it’s logical to think that the percentage of digital sales has increased since 2014, but it seems clear that the sequel has not been able to live up to its predecessor’s huge launch.

Perhaps a portion of the fanbase felt reticent to buy the game considering that the original only started getting a more unanimous praise after the release of several expansions. Luckily, it seems that the developers have learned the lesson with this new entry. As we note in our review, “Destiny 2 is a significant improvement over the original and its expansions in that the game makes more sense this time around.”

While Destiny 2 is by far the most important release of the week, there are a few more new entries in the top 40, including Sony’s Knack 2 at number 12. It seems like the poor reception of the original entry made the public stay away from the sequel, despite the much more positive impressions the sequel has been getting. In our own review we say that “while the original game was more of a showcase of what the PS4 was capable of, Knack 2 is a more thoughtful, well-rounded experience.”

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Stories for 3DS debuts at number 21, while The Binding of the Isaac: Afterbirth+ for Nintendo Switch enters at number 36.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the new discounts to Xbox One S bundles have boosted the sales of Forza Horizon 3 and other games sold with the console.
