Disney Infinity 4.0 Is Not Coming This Year, Will Focus On Expanding 3.0 Instead

Disney Infinity joined the toys-to-life segment of gaming back in 2013 and has since put out two highly successful sequels that introduced both Marvel and Star Wars into the mix. Based on the annual nature of series like Skylanders, most everybody expected a Disney Infinity 4.0 to hit later this year as well, but that will not be the case.

In an interview with GameInformer, vice president of Disney Infinity production John Vignocchi revealed that there would not be a Disney Infinity 4.0 coming in 2016. He instead says that they will focus on expanding the existing 3.0 with lots of new content.

“We’re changing our dev focus for 2016 in order to meet the market demand, and most importantly, feedback from our community. We feel that we’ve introduced the four core franchises of the Walt Disney Company to Disney Infinity, and now that we’ve done that we can start thinking differently about how we bring products to market. We’re going to give fans what they’ve been asking for, and provide updates to Disney Infinity 3.0 with more content, characters, and play sets from all of our beloved brands.”

This is probably for the best as a way to try and avoid series fatigue, as it is a lot easier to put out a new $20-30 set with new figures for people to buy as they choose, rather than forcing them to purchase an expensive starter set as the required cost of entry.

This also gives them a chance to build upon the existing franchises within Disney Infinity. There is so much more they could do with Star Wars right now and Marvel has plenty with three movies or so coming out every year. Classic Disney franchises have mostly been left behind as well, so it could be time to give them some love as well, without being passed over for a brand new franchise, like has been done in the past two games.

Also, Disney Infinity 3.0’s Marvel Battlegrounds hits in two weeks on March 15, along with some other Marvel related figures. This will turn the usual action-adventure style gameplay into an arena based fighting game, so Disney Infinity 3.0 looks like it could have a big year if they keep it up with updates like this.
