DOOM’s Highest Difficulty Sends You Back To The Game’s Beginning If You Die

ID Software’s upcoming game DOOM will have plenty to offer in the difficulty department, but one of the modes in particular sounds absolutely ridiculous. The mode is called Ultra-Nightmare, and it definitely is not for those who aggravate easily.

In Ultra-Nightmare mode what you are essentially getting is Nightmare mode (the game’s second-highest difficulty) with permadeath. This means that when you get killed you are sent back to the beginning of the game. You could be at the very end and then get killed out of nowhere, losing all of that progress in the blink of an eye.

The game’s executive produver Marty and creative director Hugo Marting recently spoke with IGN about the mode, admitting that not even anyone at ID Software has been able to beat the game on the Ultra-Nightmare difficulty yet.

They also reveal an interesting social element to this mode, saying “When you die, it drops a helmet, a DOOM marine helmet, in the world and your friends will see those and you’ll see them. So you can always try and get a little bit further than where you see that collection of helmets early in the game.”

DOOM is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 13th.
