Gwent: The Witcher Card Game may still be in Game Preview, but it looks like players can look forward to a large addition to it this year. Developer CD Projekt Red has announced Gwent: Thronebreaker, an upcoming single-player story campaign for the title.
It only received a short teaser trailer, but CD Projekt Red describes Thronebreaker as, “a single player story campaign which spins a truly regal tale of Meve, a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms. Facing an imminent invasion, she is forced to once again enter the warpath, and sets out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge.” Players will embark on quests and see new lands within The Witcher universe, as well as engage in custom-made story battles.
Little else is known about Thronebreaker other than it will “twist the game’s rules in wildly unexpected ways.” Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is based on the in-game card game of the same name where players take turns and utilize cards from different factions, each with their own unique abilities and play styles.
Gwent writer Jakub Szamalek says that the campaign should be around 10-15 hours long. “It’s a pretty long story, and I think text-wise, it’s the size of [The Witcher 3’s DLC] Hearts of Stone,” he said. “It’s a robust story, it’s not just a card game with some text tacked onto it, it’s a huge story with the card game element.”
Gwent: Thronebreaker is to set release this year on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
