Hearthstone is one of the most popular CCGs of all time, and has been for some time now. Despite launching in 2014 the game has shown no signs of slowing down, and now it has been revealed that it has surpassed another impressive milestone. The game now has over 70 million players, truly putting it in a league of its own.
The announcement was made on the official website, which also revealed that the Journey to Un’Goro expansion had more players playing together at one time than any other point in the game’s history. Due to the great news, the developers have announced that they’ll be giving away some free stuff as a way of saying thanks to the fans. Anyone who signs into the game from now until the end of May will receive 3 free Journey to Un’Goro card packs, which includes new players.
This is a great move on Blizzard’s part, as it keeps the game’s high momentum going at full speed. The game’s massive player base is truly impressive, though it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering the company. Blizzard also recently announced that their hero shooter Overwatch surpassed the 30 million players mark, with that game only being a year old at this point.
Journey to Un’Goro is the fifth expansion that has been released for Hearthstone so far, which packs the ninth new card set with 135 new cards and a new hero Maiev Shadowsong. The expansion launched early last month and is set in the primordial mists of the Un’Goro Crater, with Elise Starseeker leading the expedition to explore the region.
Hearthstone originally launched for PC in early 2014, before coming to iOS and Android later that year. The game features cross-platform play, which allows players to play together no matter which device they’re playing on. It has also become a popular eSport, with cash-prize tournaments being hosted regularly.
Blizzard ended their announcement of the 70 million player milestone by saying they “look forward to sharing many more years of Hearthstone with you. Hold on to your mug, and let’s find out where the journey will take us, together!”
