L.A. Noire is coming to the Nintendo Switch soon and it was recently revealed in the game’s new trailer that one of the core aspects of the game is being changed. Well, at least on the surface.
During interrogation scenes in the official L.A. Noire Switch trailer, viewers will see that the options “Truth,” “Doubt” and “Lie” are no longer available. Instead, these options have been changed to “Good Cop,” “Bad Cop” and “Accuse” respectively. Originally, players would have to determine whether a suspect was telling the truth, lying or saying something doubtful based on the suspect’s facial animations, as well as collected evidence. However, facial motion capture was still relatively new at the time that L.A. Noire originally released, so it could sometimes be confusing as to which option the player was supposed to select.
Thinking the suspect was telling the truth oftentimes meant letting them off easy, whereas doubting what the suspect was saying would often turn Detective Phelps, the playable character, into a stereotypical “bad cop.” Furthermore, choosing the option “Lie” meant you had to have enough evidence to accuse the suspect of doing something, which could have been confusing for players who knew a suspect was lying, but may not have had enough evidence to prove it. A spokesperson representing Rockstar told Kotaku recently that the change in the options’ names “was made so that the options more accurately reflect Phelps’ behavior when a player selects each choice.”
L.A. Noire comes out on the Switch on November 14.
