New Injustice 2 Trailer Adds Scarecrow, Grodd, Captain Cold To Roster

A trio of villains are joining Netherrealm Studios’ upcoming DC Comics-inspired fighting game, Injustice 2, when it hits consoles and PC in May. Ed Boon revealed the latest trailer for the game, which shows off the return of Batman villain Bane from the first Injustice game, plus Scarecrow, Gorilla Grodd, and Captain Cold.

It’s an interesting announcement for several reasons, not least of which is that for all but Bane, this is the first time these characters have been playable in a video game. It also marks the addition of two Flash villains to the roster – the first one had Killer Frost, but she so far hasn’t been confirmed for Injustice 2 – and increases the number of Batman characters in the game to 8, far more than any other DC franchise involved in the game.

Bane and Grodd look to be the heavy hitters of the trailer: Grodd, a Flash villain, has telepathic abilities in addition to brute strength, which features in a funny “stop hitting yourself” moment about 25 seconds in. Bane, best known as the villain who “broke the Batman,” has a more realistic look than in the prior game but still seems to have the same kind of power moves, so those familiar with him should be able to jump right in.

Captain Cold’s design, while fairly different from what you’ve seen in the Flash comics or TV series, looks to bring a fun combo-heavy style that evokes memories of Mortal Kombat‘s Sub Zero. Scarecrow probably has the best design of the bunch, in a look both vastly different from the comics and Batman: Arkham series and yet instantly recognizable, with a scythe that makes him dangerous at long-range and a “super move” that seems entirely fitting for someone who pumps his enemies full of “fear toxin.”

Injustice 2 is shaping up to be a fun time for DC Comics fans and fighting game fans alike, and will hit PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 16th.
