NPD sales results for January 2016 have now been revealed with the PS4 console and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 remaining on top of the hardware and software charts respectively.

A Sony spokesperson commented on GamesBeat: “Thanks to our fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling platform and software sales leader in January, according to NPD. PS4 also saw impressive year-over-year growth in both hardware and software sales. We appreciate the support and will continue to deliver on our promise to bring the best entertainment experiences to gamers

NPD also noted it will stop reporting on PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware sales as mostly everyone has migrated over to the newer consoles. The newer consoles now have over 96 percent market share which is up from the 84 percent that it was in January 2015.

In terms of software sales, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 remains on top. It fended off Grand Theft Auto V which was in second place with NBA 2K16 in third. Star Wars Battlefront dipped a bit to be in the fourth position. Places 5 to 8 were occupied by Fallout 4, Minecraft, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege and Madden NFL 16 respectively.

The only new release on the list was LEGO Marvel Avengers which held the ninth position with FIFA 16 in the final tenth spot. Retail software sales were down 10 percent compared to last year. NPD notes this is because Dying Light came out in 2015 and no other new release in 2016 came close to the numbers from that game.
