Global shipments for the PlayStation 3 are finally closing the gap on the Xbox 360. Â According to last month’s data from Microsoft, and a new report from Sony, the game is about 2 million consoles. Â Analysts have been predicting that the PlayStation 3 would pass the Xbox 360 eventually, because of the worldwide popularity of the console.
This data aligns with the numbers that show Sony having most success outside of the United States, while Microsoft continues to dominate that market.
Kinect has definitely given Microsoft a great holiday in 2010, and analysts predict that both Sony and Microsoft will both have big holiday sales in 2011. Â The year over year gap fill for the PlayStation 3 is about 1 million consoles. Â Being that last year the gap was around 3 million, if the sales stay at the same rates for both consoles, it could take a little while longer for the PS3 to finally catch the 360.
