As promised, more Pokemon have just been added to Pokemon Go, but you won’t find 100 new Gen 2 Pokemon out and about like many were thinking. Instead these Pokemon will only be available via eggs for now, with changes possible in the future. Also, they aren’t just adding all 100 Pokemon from Gen 2, instead going with a select few, including Pichu and Togepi.
“Professor Willow has discovered Togepi and Pichu hatching from Eggs,” reads the announcement from Niantic. “Starting later today, Trainers will have the opportunity to hatch these and several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. These are the first of more Pokémon coming to Pokémon GO over the next few months.”
Along with this comes what may be the only event Pokemon Go will have over the Christmas holiday. Instead of double XP, candy, or stardust, players will be able to catch a special themed Pikachu. “Starting later today through December 29, 2016, 10:00 A.M. PST, you’ll find limited edition Pikachu all over the world. These Pikachu will be wearing a festive hat to celebrate the season!”
The addition of Gen 2 Pokemon is a big step forward for Pokemon Go, and this seems like a nice way to add these Pokemon to the game. Players who are still trying to catch some of the original 151 will not find other Pokemon clogging up the spawn points. However, this does add in the problem of Egg Incubators. Aside from specific level milestones, most players are stuck with just the single infinite incubator. Using this to catch all of these new Pokemon might take awhile, and could be costly if you end up buying more.
Still, this is probably better than just tossing 100 new Pokemon into the wild and letting players sort it out. It will be interesting to see how Togepi, Pichu, and the other additions fit within the game’s current gym meta.
