Pokemon Go Developer Asking What Events Players Want to See in 2017

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Pokemon Go was a massive hit when it first launched in July of 2016. Massive doesn’t quite describe it actually. Somehow the game took over the collective consciousness of the entire world. Things have died down since then, with the game still attracting millions of players each day from across the globe, but not being played by everyone like it was. One thing that saw a resurgence in players were the holiday events put on by developer Niantic. Now the developer is asking fans what types of Pokemon Go events they want to see in 2017.

“Trainers, thank you for making our in-game events a success,” reads the post by Niantic. “What events do you hope to see from Pokémon GO in 2017? Let us know in the comments.” So far we’ve seen Pokemon Go events for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Each offered their own special take on the holiday and how it would affect Pokemon spawn rates and other items in game.

Going into 2017, many have been asking for more of these types of events, perhaps making them a monthly thing, even if there is no particular holiday to celebrate. The reason? The events bring people back to Pokemon Go in a big way. This helps not only the returning players, but the players that have stuck with the game through its many issues, as a higher playerbase benefits everyone. And, of course, it benefits Niantic who have raked in millions of dollars in microtransactions thanks to the Pokemon Go holiday events.

January doesn’t really have much coming up, but we could see something special for Groundhog Day in February. Maybe play off the Bill Murray film and have players experience double the Pokemon encounters. I, apparently, am really bad at coming up with new Pokemon Go holiday events, but what about you? Post your thoughts in the comments below, and be sure to repost them to the Facebook message if you want Niantic to see it.
