The Pokemon World Championships for 2016 will take place on August 19th through the 21st. The event will be hosted at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel in San Francisco, CA. This event covers both the Pokemon Trading Card Game as well as the handheld video games, with contestants vying to become the world champion in either.

“The Pokémon World Championships is an invitation-only competition for players who have qualified throughout the 2016 Championship Series season, but there will be fun side events and other opportunities for everyone who attends!”

Most likely, contestants will face off in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the latest versions of the game released. However, we could see a new release come out before then, with rumors of a Pokemon Z always coming up with any announcement from Nintendo or The Pokemon Company.

This competition can get extremely fierce, with players having honed their team to perfection using breeding, EV training, and other high level Pokemon strategies. Often the teams are made up of the same Pokemon, with favorites showing up across competitors’ teams. However, we’ve seen surprises in the past, so it’s anyone’s guess what team will come out victorious in the end.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are available now on Nintendo 3DS.
