Update:Â Services have been restored.
Original Story:Â PSN is currently down as of 9pm Eastern Time. The outage began only moments ago, so it could be short, or it could last a while depending on what is causing this particular downtime. PSN outages have been rare as of late, but we have seen them crop up every now and then, usually being resolved in a matter of an hour or two.
The official Ask PlayStation account has commented on the PSN down problem, saying “We’re aware that some users are experiencing issues logging into PSN. Thanks for your patience as we investigate.” They have not given an ETA for when it might be fixed.
The particular problem right now isn’t quite clear, with many users reporting sign-in issues on PS4. Of course, PS3 is also listed as having PSN trouble on the official status page, so it could be impacting both systems. The vast majority of gamers are playing on PS4 though, so outages are first noticed there.
On the status page, the two specific services listed as having trouble right now are the PlayStation Store and “Gaming and Social”. Unfortunately, these are likely the two most important features on PSN. With them being down most gamers will likely not be able to launch or play their games, unless they are strictly offline, single player experiences.
PSN also recently had an outage in late January, though that was more isolated in terms of location. PSN isn’t the only gaming network to go down, of course. Microsoft’s Xbox Live service has had many high profile outages, though they’ve solidified their network lately. Steam recently had a short, but troublesome outage as well, which seems to be much rarer thanks to Valve relying solely on the service for game purchases.
